Founded in 2003, the University of Luxembourg is the first and only university of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Multilingual, international and research-oriented, it is also a modern institution with a personal atmosphere. The University of Luxembourg offers a range of Bachelor degree courses, however the focus of our teaching is on master degree and PhD instruction. Research focuses on a choice of particularly promising areas, including European and Business Law.

The Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance offers a unique research and teaching environment to students and researchers alike. Situated in the heart of Europe, Luxembourg is an ideal location to conduct pioneering research and offers excellent Master of Law programs (LL.M.) in fields such as:

  •     European Banking and Financial Law
  •     European and International Tax Law
  •     European Economic and Financial Criminal Law
  •     European Litigation
  •     General European Law
  •     European Private Law

The proximity of the Court of Justice of the EU and other European institutions, a vibrant international financial sector and the presence of innovative industries form natural allies for the Research Unit in Law. The general ambition of the Research Unit in Law is to position itself as a center of excellence bringing together a team with truly transnational abilities, experiences, reach and outlook which develops its research activities in European law, economic and business law as well as Luxembourgish law.

The team has strong interdisciplinary orientations and focuses on the problems and challenges of a global society, while contributing also to the constant improvement of the Luxembourg legal infrastructure.

The central objectives of the Research Unit in Law are to:

  • Conduct pioneering research and offer excellent academic training in European, international, comparative and Luxembourgish law which clarifies the relations and interactions between norms from these different levels.
  • Follow an interdisciplinary approach to research and academic training, combining philosophy, history, political sciences, sociology, finance and economics, while applying also an innovative approach where in comparative law and empirical research methods are broadly used.
  • Concentrate on topics in which the particular context of the G.D. of Luxembourg offers specific opportunities in its role as a European capital, international financial center and home to innovative industries in the area of media, telecommunications and e-commerce.
  • Form synergies with stakeholders and partners such as through the ATOZ chair in Tax law and the SES Chair in Space, Satellite Communications and Media Law. The Research Unit in Law wants to contribute to research conducted in neighboring disciplines, for example in cooperation with the two University’s Interdisciplinary Centers: Security & Trust and Systems Biomedicine. The creation of a Max Planck Institute for “International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law” is strengthening the network of already existing transversal research activities and international relations.

The Faculty has recently launched a Doctoral School in Law. It offers study programs at all levels, has students and professors from over 60 countries around the world, and international exchange agreements with over 25 universities, including Columbia Law School, Dickson Poon School of Law at King’s College in London, Peking Law School, National Law School Bangalore and Moscow’s Higher School of Economics.
