Başak Başoğlu is a Full Professor of Civil Law at Pîrî Reis University Faculty of Law (Istanbul), where she serves as Head of the Civil Law Department since 2018. She earned her law degree and Ph.D. from Istanbul University, LL.M. from Istanbul Bilgi University and her habilitation in Civil Law from the Turkish Inter-University Council. She has also been a qualified lawyer and a member of the Istanbul Bar Association since 2005.
Her research focuses on contract, tort, property and family law, with additional interests in comparative, environmental and digital law. Her work has been supported by fellowships and research grants from the Max Planck Society, DAAD, French Government and the UNIDROIT. Previously, she was awarded the “Make Our Planet Great Again” (MOPGA) fellowship from the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs for her research on climate change liability and recently she served as the 2024–2025 Sir Roy Goode Scholar at UNIDROIT, where she continues to collaborate closely.
Başak Başoğlu has been a member of the European Law Institute (ELI) since 2013, and a member of the ELI Council since 2021, where she co-chaired the Fundraising Committee between 2021 and 2025. She also established and co-chairs the Turkish Hub. In addition to her involvement with the ELI, she is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Rona Serozan Foundation for Comparative Legal Research (Istanbul), Secretary General and a Board Member of the Society of European Contract Law (SECOLA), as well as a member of the International Academy of Comparative Law (IACL), for which she served as General Rapporteur in 2022 on “Green Finance and Protection of the Environment: An Efficient Couple?”.
