PhD (1994), Habilitation (2000), Chair of European Private Law at Bielefeld University (2001), since 2008 Chair of European Private and Commercial Law, Comparative Law and Legal History at Osnabrück University and Director of the European Legal Studies Institute there, Dean/Vice Dean 2010-2013 and 2017-2022.

Hans Schulte-Nölke has particular expertise in contract and consumer law as well as liability law, and frequently deals with topics at the intersection of contract, commercial and data law, including online platforms, e-commerce and the law of the data economy. Hans has been awarded several competitive research grants. He has been invited to give more than 100 guest lectures around the world.

Since 2013, he has also held a part-time professorship in law at Radboud University in Nijmegen. In 2016, he was elected to the Academia Europaea. He has been a member of the American Law Institute (ALI) since 2019. He regularly advises legislative bodies on the preparation and drafting of legislation and also acts as an arbitrator.

Hans was one of the founding members of the ELI and a member of the ELI Council (2011-2019) and a member of the ELI Executive Committee (2017-2019).
