Professor Lorena Bachmaier Winter is full professor at the Law Faculty of Complutense University Madrid since 2009, where she also obtained her doctorate in law in 1994 (best doctoral thesis). She also holds a degree in Political Science (1989, International Relations) from the same University. She teaches criminal procedure, civil procedure, justice systems and arbitration. Since 2004 also teaches in Saint Louis University, Missouri summer law school on civil law systems and rule of law in transitional democracies.
Her legal studies focus on international judicial cooperation, the EU process of legal harmonization and the establishment of the Area of Freedom Security and Justice (AFSJ). She is author/editor of 18 books and has published more than two hundred scientific articles. Her work has been published in eight languages. She has been visiting scholar at numerous universities worldwide, among those the Universities of Berkeley, Harvard or Stanford, and regularly at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg, Germany.
She has been awarded several prices and collaborates regularly with the Council of Europe. She is actually member of the EU Commission Expert Group on Criminal Policy.
