The ELI's Home in Vienna

The Secretariat of the ELI, which is hosted by the University of Vienna, is tasked to support the competent bodies of the Institute. It is located at Schottenring 16 (at the old stock exchange) in the heart of Vienna. It is close to the main building of the University, the Law Faculty building, the representation of the European Commission in Austria as well as the information office of the European Parliament.

Small meetings with up to 15 participants can be organised at the ELI Secretariat. For bigger meetings, different venues can be organised. We are located at:

Secretary General

Dr Vanessa Wilcox, LLM (Cantab) is the Secretary General of the ELI. Dr Wilcox holds a Master’s Degree in Commercial Law (LLM) from the University of Cambridge (2006) and a Doctoral Degree from the University of Vienna (2014), for which she won the Dr Maria Schaumayer-Stiftung Prize (2015) and the Association of Austrian Bankers Prize (2016). Among other things, Dr Wilcox is a Fellow of the European Centre of Tort and Insurance Law (ECTIL, since 2009) and is an Honorary Professor of Yantai University Law School (China, since 2015). She lectures at the University of Vienna and has held positions at other universities in Austria and abroad. Her role as Secretary General includes enhancing the ELI's network, establishing contacts with other institutions and raising awareness of the ELI and its work. She is also in charge of the coordination of the Secretariat's work and the organisation of events and maintains close contact with ELI Bodies. Dr Wilcox can be reached here.

Senior Project Officer

Tomasz Dudek is a Senior Project Officer at the ELI Secretariat. He holds a Master of Laws degree and an MA in International Relations from the University of Warsaw. He has worked for the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), the Polish Ombudsperson Office and several human rights NGOs, including the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights. Tomasz is responsible for the management of the following ELI projects: From Transnational Principles to European Rules of Civil Procedure; For a European Approach to R&D Expenses Qualifying for the Common Corporate Tax Base Super Deduction; Principles for a Data Economy; Common Constitutional Traditions in Europe; and Blockchain Technology and Smart Contracts. He is also a liaison person in the Secretariat for the SIGs on Digital Law, Intellectual Property Law and Family and Succession Law. Dudek can be contacted here.

Project Officer

Aline Carruet is a Project Officer at the ELI Secretariat. She holds an MA in Human Rights from the University of Vienna and an MSC in International Development and Humanitarian Emergencies from the London School of Economics (LSE). She has previously worked for the FRA and has prior experience in working for human rights NGOs as well as United Nations organisations including the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA). Aline is responsible for the management of the following ELI projects: Empowering European Families; Draft Model Rules on Online Intermediary Platforms; Protection of Adults in International Situations; and Business & Human Rights: Access to Justice and Effective Remedies. She is also a liaison person for the SIGs on Competition Law, Global Private Law and Fundamental Rights Law. Aline can be contacted here.

Project Officer

Katja Kolman is a Project Officer at the ELI Secretariat. She holds a Master of Laws from the University of Ljubljana. She has previously worked at the FRA, where she was involved in a handful of research projects. She gained additional work experience at the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Slovenia to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and the Legal-Informational Centre for NGOs in Ljubljana. Kolman is responsible for the management of the following prospective ELI projects: Access to Digital Assets and Legislative Proposals on Liability in Digitalised Environments: Conflict of Law and Substantive Law Issues. She is also a liaison person in the Secretariat for ELI’s Hubs and the following SIGs: Administrative Law, Business and Financial Law, Dispute Resolution and Insurance Law. Administrative Officer

Zuzana Fačková is an Administrative Officer at the ELI Secretariat. She holds a Master’s Degree in European Studies from the Comenius University in Bratislava and is currently writing her Master thesis in Political Science at the University of Vienna. She has previously worked at the FRA and has experience in event management and administration. In the past, she has worked in the parliamentary bureau for an MP of the German Bundestag within the framework of the International Parliamentary Scholarship programme. Communications Officer

Dr Doris Ladewig is a Communications Officer at the ELI Secretariat. She holds a Master's degree and doctorate in communication science from the University of Vienna and a post graduate in Marketing & Advertising from the Vienna University of Economics and Business. Dr Ladewig has worked as Head of Corporate Communications for leading multi-national Banking, IT and Consulting companies in Austria, Germany and Central and Eastern Europe. For ten years she was also a lecturer in communications at Salzburg University. Dr Ladewig can be contacted here.

Dr Sebastian Schwamberger, LLM is an Austrian lawyer who works at the Department of Civil Law at the University of Vienna. He is responsible for the MyELI platform and supports the Secretariat in IT issues. Schwamberger can be reached here.
