The European Law Faculties Association (ELFA) was founded in 1995 in Leuven by more than 80 Faculties of Law located in different universities across Europe. Today, ELFA brings together over 150 members from countries within Europe and beyond. Its mission is to enhance legal education and increase its quality by providing a platform for discussion, exchange, and cooperation.
To this aim, ELFA acts as an international forum for discussing topics related to legal education and pursues its objectives through two main channels. Firstly, ELFA hosts an annual conference where legal scholars, educators, and practitioners come together to discuss legal topics related to legal education. For three days, through plenary sessions, workshops, and round tables, the association encourages members to engage in meaningful dialogue. This conference serves as a vibrant platform for networking, sharing insights, and exploring innovative teaching methods in the field of Law. The annual conference is an excellent opportunity to discover, discuss and develop new cooperation projects between member faculties.
Secondly, ELFA actively contributes to legal scholarship by publishing the European Journal of Legal Education. This online peer-reviewed legal journal provides a space for high-quality research, analysis, and discussion on legal education. Among others, topics include learning theory and pedagogy, use of technology in legal education, classroom and clinical approaches, issues related to academic, vocational, and professional legal education, or innovative contributions to the teaching of law.
Additionally, and to support young researchers, the association annually organizes the ELFA Award for the best Doctoral Thesis on European Law.
As an association, ELFA represents and promotes the interests of its members in the field of legal education and research. In its initiatives, it engages with other international associations and organizations of legal professionals to ensure that legal education remains sound, effective and comprehensive in method and values, as well as in line with current issues and challenges in the field.
