The Foundation is an independent institution. By initiating and financing scientific research, the Foundation wants to draw public attention to several fundamental problems that arise in connection with the necessary renewal of the legal system. In this way, the Foundation wants to contribute to the development of a strategic vision regarding the future structure and organization of the legal system and the entire range of possibilities and procedures for conflict resolution that the Netherlands has to offer. A spearhead in all our research themes is improving the accessibility of the law for citizens and small businesses.

Special attention is paid to digitalization and AI, which will play a major role in the legal system in the coming years. They will therefore form an important angle for the research that the Foundation wants to promote, with the focus on how these applications can increase access to the law and the conflict resolution capacity of the (legal) system.

Another topic is the constitutional position of the judicial organization. In October 2024, we will publish a report in which ten specialists shed light on the independence of the judiciary in the Netherlands from various perspectives – international, constitutional, financial, social, practical and ethical. The approach is always critical and constructive: after an inventory of independence defects, the central question is what improvements are possible. The focus is not only on the legal level (appointments, financing, disciplinary law, constitutional embedding), but also on the culture within the judiciary.
