The EAJ is one the four regional group of the International Association of Judges (IAJ) encompassess 44 European national associations. Its purpose is to discuss local problems concerning the Judiciary. Its members usually meet twice a year (the first meeting in springtime and the second on the occasion of the IAJ annual meeting in autumn) and may pass resolutions either on general issues affecting the Judiciary of the whole concerned area, or specifically regarding one ore more given countries.

Representatives of the EAJ are also active in the Council of Europe offices, such as the Consultative Council of European Judges (CCJE) and the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ).
