On 25–26 September 2025, the Spanish Hub of the European Law Institute (ELI) co-organised the ‘International Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Disruptive Technologies and the Law’, held at the Headquarters of the Spanish Land Register in Madrid, Spain.
The event convened distinguished academics, legal practitioners, and policymakers from across Europe and the United States to explore the profound transformations currently reshaping the legal landscape. Central to the discussions was Artificial Intelligence (AI), recognised as one of the most pervasive and cross-sectoral disruptive technologies of our time. Its rapid integration into both public and private sectors is challenging existing legal frameworks and prompting a reconsideration of legal theory, regulatory approaches, and interpretative methodologies.
ELI President Teresa Rodríguez de las Heras Ballell participated in Panel 4, entitled ‘AI Law and Ethics’, contributing to discussions on the ethical and regulatory dimensions of AI deployment.
In addition to AI, the conference examined the legal implications of a range of emerging technologies, including blockchain, quantum computing, virtual and augmented reality, the Internet of Things (IoT), and advanced automation.
Key topics addressed included:
· AI and the Law
· Autonomous Systems Based on AI
· Metaverse and Legal Frameworks
· Legal Professions and AI
· Health Data and Medical AI
· AI and Copyrights
The conference provided an important platform for interdisciplinary dialogue, fostering engagement between academic scholarship and professional practice. It contributed to the ongoing reflection on the legal, ethical, and societal challenges posed by technological innovation in an increasingly digital world.
