Call For Interest – ELI SIG On Criminal Law

30.04.2025

Subject to sufficient interest and formal approval, the ELI will proceed with the launch of the SIG.

The Criminal Law SIG aims at contributing to advancing the understanding of traditional legal principles in the field of criminal law and criminal procedure in a rapidly changing world. In particular, the increasing complexities of the criminal justice system, especially with the advent of new technologies and artificial intelligence (AI), which present significant challenges and opportunities for legal practice, is now well recognised.

This poses the need to develop legal analysis which contributes to enhancing the efficacy and fairness of the criminal justice system, protecting fundamental rights. By promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, the SIG also seeks to enrich the dialogue between disciplines, ensuring that our work addresses the complex socio-legal challenges of contemporary society, exploring critical issues such as the reliability of forensic evidence, the psychological underpinnings of criminal behaviour and the impact of socio-economic factors on crime rates.

The general objectives of SIG will be to:

  • organise seminars of discussion with experts and possible publication of results;
  • promote cooperation with other institutional actors to enable participation in research calls;
  • formulation of policy recommendations not only in order to contribute to academic discourse, but also provide practical solutions that enhance the integrity and effectiveness of the criminal justice system, engaging with policymakers, legal practitioners and the public to disseminate our findings and advocate for evidence-based reforms.
