Austrian Hub Held a Lecture on Sunsetting as an Adaptive Strategy

02.06.2022

On 2 June 2022, ELI Austrian Hub held a lecture entitled ‘Sunsetting as an Adaptive Strategy.’ Prof Roberta Romano (Yale Law School, Sterling Professor of Law and Director of the Yale Law School Center for the Study of Corporate Law) gave her presentation on the above topic.

In her presentation, based on a paper co-authored together with Simon Levin (Princeton University, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology), Prof Romano made a forceful argument to include a sunstetting provision into new legislation in order to nudge legislators to evaluate laws after they have been in place for a period of time. This, inter alia, allows for a legal system to remain flexible and adaptable and it also ensures another dimension of democratic legitimacy for laws. The lecture was attended by a sizeable audience both at the University of Graz and online.

The lecture was followed by a lively Q&A session between Professor Romano and the audience.
