ELI’s Turkish Hub Organises Webinar on the ELI Report on Empowering European Families

23.01.2024

On 23 January 2024 the Hub hosted its eighth webinar as part of a series dedicated to introducing ELI projects to Turkish legal practitioners and discussing their potential influence on Turkish Law.

The webinar, convened by 25 people, began with a welcoming speech by Assoc Prof Dr Hüseyin Can Aksoy (ELI Turkish Hub Co-Chair; Bilkent University, Ankara), and followed by an in-dept presentation of the ELI Report on Empowering European Families: Towards More Party Autonomy in European Family and Succession Law by Mr İsmail Dede (Research Assistant at Galatasaray University, Istanbul) who also translated the ELI Report into Turkish.

This was followed by deeper insights into the topic's alignment with Turkish law by distinguished scholars Dr Biset Sena Güneş (Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, Hamburg) and Assoc Prof Dr Bahar Öcal Apaydın (Osmangazi University, Eskişehir).

First, Dr. Biset Sena Güneş discussed the jurisdiction and applicable law issues of the ELI report and their possible implications for Turkish law, particularly in European countries with Turkish populations. Then, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bahar Öcal Apaydın evaluated party autonomy in current Family law and identified how the ELI report could affect Turkish law, especially regarding issues that could allow for more party autonomy.
