Herbert Zech

Herbert Zech is Professor of Civil Law, Technology and IT Law at Humboldt University of Berlin and a Director at the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society. He studied law in Erlangen and Munich and received his doctorate from the University of Constance. He later studied biology in Kaiserslautern, reflecting his longstanding interest in the intersection of natural sciences and law. Before joining Humboldt University in 2019, he held academic positions at the University of Bayreuth and the University of Basel, where he became Full Professor of Life Sciences Law and Intellectual Property Law in 2015. He completed his habilitation in 2012 with a thesis on Information as an Object of Protection. His research focuses primarily on technology law and intellectual property law, particularly the legal challenges arising from Big Data and Artificial Intelligence.
