ELI Follows, with Great Interest, the Provisional Deal on the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive

14.12.2023

On 14 December 2023, the European Parliament and the Council reached a provisional agreement on the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive.

The new EU directive aims at contributing to enhancing the protection of the environment and human rights in the EU and globally by setting out obligations for large companies to mitigate (potential) adverse impacts of their operations, including those of their subsidiaries and business partners, on the environment and human rights.

The need to increase access to remedies for victims of business practices and to ensure compliance with human rights by business enterprises was underlined by ELI in its 2022 Report on Business and Human Rights: Access to Justice and Effective Remedies. ELI therefore welcomes any constructive progress to advance human rights and sustainable business practices.
